Predoctoral Training
Doctoral students receive their degrees from the University of Maryland when they do their doctoral research with any faculty
member either on the UMD campus or with our NIDCD adjunct colleagues. All course work takes place on the College Park campus,
and students are required to take the curriculum required of their doctoral department. Most students choose to receive
their degrees in the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) doctoral program, though, if more appropriate for career goals,
students may also get their degrees through the home department of their C-CEBH mentor (e.g., Biology, Electrical and
Computer Engineering, Hearing and Speech Sciences, Linguistics, or Psychology).
Detailed information about the various doctoral programs can be found at the links below, along with a list of the faculty
who are part of those specific programs. Prior to selecting a doctoral program, students should contact their potential
mentor(s) for advice as to the best program for each individual student and his/her long-term goals
While each department has its own policies and procedures for graduate education, all programs follow the basic procedures,
admissions policies, and policies of the Graduate School.
Students admitted to NACS or one of the other doctoral programs and who are working with a C-CEBH mentor or one of our
colleagues at NIDCD are automatically a member of C-CEBH. Support for students in their first several years of doctoral
study is provided by UM fellowships, assistantships, and a variety of other sources, or through the laboratory of the NIDCD
mentor.
