Comparative Aspects of Auditory Streaming, Attention, and Object Identification
One stellar example of interdisciplinary collaborations that have come about from the P30 is new work just beginning on auditory streaming and related mechanisms in speech perception. The Shamma lab is investigating the neural underpinnings streaming in the ferret, Dooling has recently begun psychophysical experiments on auditory streaming of vocalizations in birds, and Rochelle Newman (a new P30 investigator) is examining auditory streaming in human infants. By teaming with Sandra Gordon-Salant and Marjorie Leek, one can draw comparisons among ferrets, birds, children, normal and aged human adults (Gordon-Salant) and hearing impaired listeners (Leek) in a situation where the cross-laboratory methodologies, equipment, and procedures have an unusually high degree of coordination.
